Losing Weight, Losing Your Face? Meet Adipeau
GLP1 medications have changed the conversation around weight loss almost overnight. For many people, the results on the scale are life changing. But here in the clinic, we are seeing the other side of the story every week: faces that look deflated, cheeks that have flattened, new laxity along the jaw, and skin that suddenly looks years older than the person wearing it.
The body does not choose where it loses fat. When weight comes off quickly, the face goes with it. And that hits right at the heart of what we do at SKYN.
Why facial fat matters so much
We spend a lot of time talking about collagen, and for good reason. Aesthetic treatments are all about banking collagen while your body's own production slowly declines. But collagen is only part of the structure. Beneath it sit your facial fat pads, the soft cushion that holds the skin up, keeps the cheeks full, and keeps the jawline crisp. When that cushion shrinks, the skin above it has nothing to rest on. It drapes, it folds, and it begins to sag. Losing facial fat works against everything we are trying to build.
A completely different approach
Most skincare works on the surface. Adipeau works with the fat itself. Its key ingredient is an extract of black ginger, Kaempferia parviflora, which Adipeau calls KPRE and has patented for this use.
Here is what makes it so interesting. Lab work done with collaborators at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden found that black ginger extract behaves differently depending on which fat cell it meets. With young fat cells, it helps them multiply, which rebuilds volume where it has been lost. With bloated, overfilled fat cells, it helps them shrink, which tones puffy areas. Small, healthy fat cells are left alone. The team also confirmed on living human skin that the extract reaches the fat layer from the surface.
The new study
Adipeau ran a clinical study on its Volume Cream in 2021, and it has just been published. Thirty five people applied Volume Cream to their faces for six months while researchers measured their faces with 3D imaging. Hollow areas filled. Puffy areas toned. Both in the same face. The gains at six months were greater than at three months, while the toning effects held steady from the three month mark.
We also appreciate how candid the founder has been about its limits. This was a pilot study with no placebo group, and it enrolled 35 people rather than the 75 originally planned. That is an early chapter rather than the final word, and we will keep watching the research. But the 3D results line up with what we hoped to see from a product like this.
Volume Cream and Strength Gel
Adipeau makes two formulas built around the same active ingredient. Volume Cream is focused on renewal, so it is the one for hollows and areas that look sunken or depleted. Strength Gel is focused on toning and strength, so it is the one for areas that feel soft, heavy, or puffy. Most faces need a little of both, which is why we love using them together.
Volume Cream is formulated to address the look of lost volume in the face and hands. The first places to look hollow are usually the sides of the mouth, under the eyes and the temples, thanks to sun exposure and everyday movement. In a registered 3D imaging study, currently under peer review, it showed volume changes consistent with a fuller appearance, and it gives your skin an immediate glow.
Best for: Hollow looking areas around the mouth, under the eyes and at the temples, the backs of the hands, skin that has lost its fullness.
Key ingredients: Safflower seed oil, Kaempferia parviflora (black ginger) extract, cucumber extract, rice bran wax and vitamin E. It delivers non comedogenic long chain fatty acids into the pores, with soothing ingredients shown to improve pore quality and a light natural cucumber scent with no synthetic fragrance.
How to use: Smooth it over areas that look hollow on your face and hands. Most people start with Strength Gel and add this cream a few weeks in. Your SKYN provider can help you decide where to focus.
Pairing it with your treatments
Adipeau is a topical, not a procedure or a filler, so it is not meant to replace in office care. It is a beautiful complement to it. Our biostimulators, like Radiesse and Sculptra, work on the collagen side of the structure, while Adipeau supports the fat beneath it. Working on both layers at once is how we build results that look natural and last.
As with anything that works on the deeper layers of the skin, consistency is everything. The study measured results over six months, so think of Adipeau as a daily habit rather than a quick fix.
Who we recommend it for
Adipeau is especially worth considering if you are using a GLP1 medication or losing weight quickly and want to protect your face along the way, if you have noticed hollowing in the cheeks or under the eyes with age, or if you have areas of puffiness you would like to see more toned and defined.
