What are biostimulators, and how do they work?
From our mid twenties, the body makes a little less collagen every year. Over time the cheeks soften, the temples hollow, the jawline loses its edge and skin starts to feel thinner. Biostimulators work on that cause.
Sculptra® is made of poly L lactic acid, a material the body slowly absorbs. As it does, it prompts your skin to lay down new collagen in the areas where structure has faded. Sculptra is FDA approved to correct fine lines and wrinkles in the cheek area, and in its clinical study results lasted up to two years.
Radiesse® is made of calcium hydroxylapatite in a smooth gel. The gel gives some support and lift right away, and the particles encourage your own collagen to build over the following months.
Are biostimulators the same as filler?
No, and the difference matters. Hyaluronic acid filler adds volume the moment it is placed, which makes it perfect for shaping lips or smoothing a single fold. Biostimulators work slowly and build structure from within, so the result looks like you on a well rested day.
Many women do best with a little of both: a biostimulator to rebuild the foundation over months, and a touch of dermal filler or Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin® for the finishing details. Unlike hyaluronic acid filler, biostimulators cannot simply be dissolved, which is one reason I take a conservative approach and build results in stages.

Sculptra is often my choice for volume lost across the whole face. Radiesse suits a woman who wants visible support sooner, especially along the jawline or the hands. We choose together, and sometimes the answer is both.
Who is a good candidate for biostimulators?
Biostimulators may be a beautiful fit if you are noticing:
Hollow cheeks or temples
A softening jawline or early laxity in the lower face
Thin or crepey skin, or skin that feels less firm
Deeper smile lines and marionette lines
Volume that has quietly faded after weight loss, including weight loss with GLP 1 medications
When weight comes off quickly, the face can lose fat and support along with it. Biostimulators can help restore some of that structure gradually, so you look rested and like yourself, not transformed. Biostimulators are not the right choice today if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active breakout, rash or infection where we would treat, have a history of keloids or raised scarring, or are allergic to any ingredient. Sculptra is not placed in the lips. Very loose skin or heavy jowls may need more than an injectable can give, and I will tell you so honestly.

At SKYN, Sculptra® is $700 per vial and Radiesse® starts at $700. Most women need 2 to 3 sessions, spaced about four to six weeks apart, and the number of vials depends on how much volume your face has lost. That is why I map your sessions and your total at your free consultation, so you see every price before you book.
SKYN Society members pay their member price: Sculptra is $665 per vial on Essential and $630 per vial on Signature, and member pricing applies to Radiesse too. What to expect at your appointment
Your skin is numbed, then I place small amounts exactly where structure has faded. Most women describe it as pressure and a little tenderness. The visit is short, and your next session is planned before you leave.
Afterward, mild swelling, tenderness or bruising is common and usually settles within a few days. After Sculptra, I will show you how to massage the area at home. The guideline from Galderma, the maker of Sculptra, is five minutes, five times a day, for five days. Skip hard workouts for the rest of the day. Small bumps under the skin can happen, so text or call us with anything at all. I would always rather hear from you.
When will I see results, and how long do they last?
Biostimulators reward patience.
Sculptra: many women see the first change at about a month. The full result builds over 2 to 3 months after your series and can last up to two years.
Radiesse: you see some lift right away, and it continues to build over 2 to 3 months. Many women enjoy results for a year or more.
